English Language Learners



The goal of language acquisition support services for English Language Learners (ELLs) in Adams 12 Five Star Schools is to promote students’ learning of both social and academic English, while also being given opportunities to learn grade level content. This goal is achieved through the use of ELD/ESL instruction as part of an ELL’s first best instruction. ELD/ESL is designed to promote language development in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and ELD/ESL instruction is based on the Colorado English Language Proficiency Standards. ELD/ESL instruction is provided by highly qualified teachers. Additionally, it is the district expectation that all teachers develop teaching skills in order to help ELLs learn and succeed. This includes providing ample and appropriate opportunities for language development as well as sheltering grade level content in such a way as to make it comprehensible to ELLs.

Successful English Language Learners

  • Learn the English language through ELD/ESL instruction as well as language development opportunities within the context of grade-level content
  • Have access to the academic content at their grade level
  • Have their linguistic, academic and cultural needs met at their own neighborhood schools
  • Are grouped heterogeneously with native English speakers to benefit from native English-speaking models when appropriate
  • Have the same opportunity to participate in higher level content classes, enrichment experiences, and extracurricular activities as do their native English speaking peers
  • Receive appropriate intervention for their specific language and academic needs from the appropriate educator when first best instruction (ELD/ESL + appropriate classroom instruction) is not sufficient

Units of Study

The ELD units of study are based upon Colorado English Language Proficiency (CELP) standards and uses World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) measures for achievement.

  • Unit 2: K-3 Describing / 4-5 Explaining
  • Unit 3: K - Identifying & Classifying / 1-5 Compare & Contrast
  • Unit 4: K - Retelling / 1-3 Recounting / 4-5 Summarizing
  • Unit 5: K - Sequencing / 1-5 Cause & Effect
  • Unit 6: K-3 Interpreting & Drawing Conclusions / 4-5 Analyzing
  • Unit 7: K-3 Expressing and Supporting Opinions / 4-5 Arguing & Justifying
